Zink is een metaalachtig chemisch element met symbool Zn en atoomnummer 30. Het maakt deel uit van groep 12 (of IIB) van overgangselementen op het periodiek systeem der elementen. Het wordt gevonden in de aarde en verschillende mineralen, waaronder sfaleriet, bevatten zink. zink is een donker bruingrijs metaal met een relatief lage dichtheid (7,14 g/cm3). Het is een ductiel en kneedbaar metaal, wat betekent dat het gemakkelijk kan worden gebogen of gevormd. Het is ook relatief zacht bij kamertemperatuur, maar hardt uit als het afkoelt. Het is zeer goed bestand tegen corrosie en oxidatie. zink wordt zeer vaak gebruikt in legeringen, waaronder koper (de meest gebruikte algemene legering, koper-zink, wordt gewoonlijk messing genoemd), aluminium en messing. Het wordt ook gebruikt bij de vervaardiging van coatings en andere gegalvaniseerde artikelen. Het wordt ook aan verschillende metalen toegevoegd om hun corrosieve eigenschappen te verbeteren. Daarnaast wordt zink gebruikt in de mechanische en elektrische industrie om verschillende onderdelen en componenten te produceren. zink is ook erg belangrijk voor de menselijke gezondheid, omdat het een essentiële micronutriënt is. Het grootste deel van het zink in de bloedbaan wordt aangetroffen in organen en weefsels, waaronder de huid, lever en nieren. zink speelt een belangrijke rol bij het eiwit- en vetmetabolisme en helpt het immuunsysteem en de voortplanting in stand te houden.
