Antimoon is een metaalachtig chemisch element, aangeduid met Sb en met atoomnummer 51, dat deel uitmaakt van groep 15 van het periodiek systeem der elementen. Het is een glanzend wit metaal, dat bij blootstelling aan lucht verandert in een kleurloos poeder. De fysische eigenschappen van antimoon zijn: Dichtheid: 6,69 g/cm3, smeltpunt: 630°C, kookpunt: 1587°C en vlampunt: 630°C. Antimoon heeft interessante chemische eigenschappen zoals: het is zeer reactief met zuren en lost gemakkelijk op in zure oplossingen; het kan heftig reageren met halogenen; en het reageert met zuurstof, halogenen en zouten om oxozuurverbindingen te vormen. Antimoon wordt voornamelijk gebruikt om metaallegeringen, batterijen, halfgeleiders en katalysatoren te maken. Het wordt ook veel gebruikt in de textielindustrie, de chemische industrie en de verfindustrie. Antimoonverbindingen worden ook gebruikt als insecticiden en fungiciden.
