Cerium is een zwaar metaal dat behoort tot de lanthanidefamilie en de chemische reeks actiniden. Het is het meest voorkomende splijtingsmetaal op aarde en het meest reactieve chemische element in zijn reeks. cerium is een zeer kneedbaar en kneedbaar zilvergrijs metaal. Het heeft een relatief hoog smeltpunt (1037°C) en een kookpunt van 3500°C. De dichtheid is ongeveer 6,77 g/cm3 en de atoommassa is 140,1 g/mol. cerium is een relatief reactief metaal en wordt geclassificeerd als een zwaar metaal. Het is zeer kneedbaar en ductiel en kan worden gelegeerd met andere metalen en materialen om de mechanische en fysieke eigenschappen te verbeteren. cerium is ook zeer vuurvast en corrodeert niet gemakkelijk in een oxiderende omgeving. cerium wordt gebruikt in een verscheidenheid aan toepassingen, met name in de verbrandingsmotorindustrie. Het wordt ook gebruikt in legeringen, elektronica, smeermiddelen, damplampen en katalysatoren. cerium wordt ook gebruikt in vuurvaste materialen en superlegeringen voor de lucht- en ruimtevaart- en auto-industrie.
