Waterstof is het chemische element met atoomnummer 1, symbool H. Het lichtste element in het universum, waterstof is ook het meest aanwezig. Waterstof is het hoofdbestanddeel van de meeste sterren en interstellaire materie. Op aarde komt het voornamelijk voor in de toestand van vloeibaar of vast water (ijs) en gasvormig (waterdamp). Het maakt deel uit van de samenstelling van een van de moleculen die essentieel zijn voor het leven: water. Waterstof is licht ontvlambaar, evenals de verbindingen die ervan zijn afgeleid. Dit element is bij kamertemperatuur een gas, het werd benadrukt door Cavendish in 1766.
